History of the House

The restaurant is on the ground and first floors of an original medieval house called “The Holy Trinity” that was rebuilt at the end of the 16th century and adapted to its current form by František Liebl in 1875. The romantic balcony was built in 1876 by Robert Mischna.

At the turn of the 19th and 20th century the house was mentioned only as a part of the neighbouring building “Big fish” no. 59/3. In 1903 the Cronicle of Royal Prague mentions a restaurant called “U gambrina” with a picture of the Holy Trinity which, however, was not preserved until today.

Gambrin, Gambrinus (translated also as “the patron”) was a king of Flanders, whose existence is supported by historical documents, the first king to introduce brewing and to be appointed an honorary chief of the brewery guild. Until today his name figuratively symbolises the patron of beer and the restaurant guild.

In 1923 the restaurant was opened under a new name “U Patrona” and had a similar appearance as it has today.

During the restitutions that followed the “Velvet Revolution” the building returned to the original owner and in 1992 – 95 Ing. arch. Jiří Pošmourný carried out its renovation. In 2002 the house, as well as most of the surrounding buildings, was partly damaged by floods affecting the Czech Republic.

Today’s appearance of the restaurant U Patrona is a result of an ambitious reconstruction in August 2003.
